My name is Rohul Amin. I am a second year Masters student in the Computer Science department at NYU’s Tandon School of Engineering and a recipient of the 2016 Tailwind Scholarship. The time here at NYU has been spent actively learning how technology can be better utilized to solve problems all around us.
As our communities becomes more and more connected via technology, there is a substantial breath of information collected that can be analyzed to find patterns and possible solutions of problems. I spend a large portion of time using machine learning techniques to find patterns in a Yelp dataset. This model was able to look through Yelp reviews and business related information to predict the commercial needs of a specific neighborhood. The use of machine learning is endless and such techniques can be used to analyze data related to national heath care to neighborhood crime and countless issues in between.
The Tailwind Scholarship allowed me, along with my fellow recipients, to focus on learning ways that can better help our communities. The knowledge we gain must take into account our changing world. I hope to continue to learn and use what I’ve learned to further benefit my community in the long term.
